Serene House with Courtyard Pond
This serene house is a completed renovation project, by Studio Mumbai Architects, who stripped back an existing dwelling located in Bandra, Maharashtra, India. The house was taken down to the concrete bones of the structure, cloaked only by the surrounding trees. The team redesigned the home from the ground up to include an additional floor and terrace area, allowing more inclusion of nature elements to provide an environmental calm that would flow throughout the entire space.

A central courtyard harbors a still lily pad pool that reflects the sky, and the rise of a wooden staircase that appears to float on the surface of the water.

The airy home transitions over three levels via a series of floating staircases that are staggered in flight orientation, providing opportunities for pause over each level.

Shielded behind layers of glass and wooden screens, the home is entered via a gallery that leads to a dual height living area with polished limestone floor and coordinating lime plaster walls. Huge bi-fold doors open the living space up to a sprawling timber deck overlooking the garden and public domain.

The internal décor pulls the outdoors inside by continuous use of bamboo wall treatments that play with light and shadow, and planted trellises that provide soft curtains of privacy and sectioning, evoking a feeling of natural protection from the busy urban environment beyond.

Cubism In Interior Design
This style used by Gemelli Design Studio is reminiscent of the cubism art movement pioneered by Pablo Picasso. With cool colors and quirky abstract lines they present the room from multiple view points and make a mockery of perspective. There is no doubt that this would entertain the eye for a time, but the question is could you live in a place like this on a permanent basis?

If you think this level of zaniness would drive you slowly crazy, or the topsy-turvy feeling might leave you feeling a little design drunk–like the set of a big brother house–you might still appreciate these as a fun place to spend a weekend, the unique look is definitely a refreshing change from the usual safe neutral palette and plain walls.

This wild kitchen appears as a disco of stationery green laser beams, certainly not a place you’d like to face with a migraine, in fact that is probably true of every room in this design style, but on the other hand the energized interior would give you a boost in the morning, who needs coffee with all this going on!

The complication of angles cleverly throws off all dimensions too, adding interest, and dividing even the smallest space into a maze of zones, which makes a tiny room appear bigger by distracting the eye from the real proportions.

Hidden Egg Treehouse by Joel Allen
IT worker-cum-carpenter, Joel Allen, harbored a dream of creating a house that organically meshed with the environment of his much loved woods around Whistler, British Columbia, Canada. His dream became a reality after finding friends in two fresh new architects who set him on his path of a uniquely egg shaped treehouse, now known as the HemLoft Weekend Cabin.

The ideal location was decided after a months-long quest to find the perfect tree on the perfect spot of land. Without the sum of money required to buy property, Allen took the risk of squatting in the public forest, he recalls “Finding that perfect spot on crown land wasn’t so easy, I had an informal checklist of requirements, the most important ones being that it within a reasonable distance to a road, yet out of sight and out of earshot of human traffic. The other requirement was hard to qualify, but was of prime importance: the shape of the egg would need to suit the environment and be proportionate to the tree. I couldn’t explain exactly what that was but I figured I would know it when I saw it.”

After finding a patch of old growth beyond the major development of multi-million dollar homes, Allen began a long process of secret construction, which lasted over several years.

Three years after the project was complete, Allen wanted to share the beauty of the treehouse with the world, but as it was built on crown land he does not technically own it and now risks the very real possibility that it will be torn down by officials, but for now, it stays hidden safely in the forest.

A Fresh Take on Bath Tubs
Bath tubs have been a place to refresh and relax for centuries, from the old tin bath that was brought out into a front room or bedroom, to cast iron enameled roll tops, modern acrylic spas, and fitted fiberglass designs, the tub has certainly seen some changes throughout the years; this collection shows a contemporary take on many of these age old aesthetics, bringing tried and tested ideas bang up to date.

Via Lixil Milano
The concept of bringing the bathtub out into the open once more, or situating it within unexpected surroundings is back at the forefront, with bubble baths taking place in the middle of a home library. This is a nice quiet place to have a bath time read, though we’re not sure the moisture from the steam would do your prized book collection much good.

Via Lixil Milano
We’re also seeing a kick back to bathing in the great outdoors as our ancestors once did, though now we can enjoy the greenery though double glazed doors.

Ensuite bathrooms are also seeing more open designs, with huge viewing windows through to the sleeping quarters, and some without any divide at all.

Of course not all modern designs forego your modesty, some are still tucked away compactly, bedded in blocks of mosaic, or nestled into stepped platforms.

Dreamy Spaces Rendered By Muhammad Taher
Ok, some of these designs may be considered a bit over-the-top for real day-to-day life, but when it comes to dream-like interiors and majestic home design, Muhammad Taher dreams bigger than many.

When thinking of picture perfect homes, Taher thinks of romance and elegance, luxury and opulence, all set in a warm dappled sun drenched haze, over the sophisticated perfection of traditional good style.

The grandeur of this room is of a scale where nobody could actually inhabit it, but rather wander softly through it, appreciating the splendor in hushed tones with the rest of a tourist party, for this surely is the stuff palaces and stately homes are made of.

This idyllic pool scene would certainly not look out of place in the latest music video, full of the indulgent excesses in life that make us want to play the lottery! We may envy places like this for the two minute duration of a pop song, but it could be a little lonely to wander around such a vast estate day-in-day-out; it would, however, make a fantastic holiday destination, and with a Tuscan villa as beautiful as this, we doubt you’d ever be short on company for long!

Industrial Loft Apartment in Kiev
This sprawling loft interior located in the heart of Kiev, Ukraine, designed by Thank Balbek of design studio 2B Group, is rich in bold industrial character and bold style statements. The studio battled throughout the challenging design project to prove that “concrete could be warm, wood could be smooth and metal could be soft.”

At the height of trendy loft living, the three level penthouse with a total space of 380sqm, enjoys open plan lounging and kitchen areas, and even the master bathroom is wide open to the sleeping quarters–thankfully the toilet is tucked away though! The designers tell us, “In order to hide the master bedroom toilets, authors invented a mobile wooden box stylized as a large parcel. All in neutral colors except for red and green oxidized copper sheets serving as hidden shelf facades.”

The top floor of the apartment is home to a huge rooftop terrace that enjoys panoramic views from a generous sun deck, a fire pit seating zone with handmade plank benches., or from a glass walled pavilion in more wintry weather.

The kids bedroom takes on a cartoonists studio appeal, with fun illustrations strewn across every wall; the look continues in the bathroom where humorous, urban graffiti is tagged on cool concrete.

A green wall of plants grows vertically through the home, to bring the softness of nature into the manmade environment, running from the living-dining space down to the lower floor containing the lounge-home office space, plus the secondary living area that leads to the spacious master bedroom.

The lighting feature selections are kept sharp and predominantly functional, with the exception of one or two more sculptural pieces, and pendant lights are hung in multiples for extra impact.

Upholstery is selected in varying tones or in contrasting hues to avoid an overly matched up scheme, and instead creates the beginnings of a more eclectic space, where the finished look feels as though it may have evolved over time rather than being painstakingly planned down to the last minutely coordinated detail (even if it has!)

Furniture artisans at SplinterWorks, formed in 2009 by Miles Hartwell and Matt Withington in the South of England, show their “particular affinity with developing work that re-thinks how we prepare, cook and experience food” in this collection of inspiring kitchen designs that break the grid of the traditional shaped kitchen, and carries it through as a fully functioning yet more soulful place that can be appreciated in social settings as well as in routine daily tasks.

To get a sense of the company’s aesthetics, take a look at ‘Tipping Point, a typical Splinterworks project.
Tipping Point is an optically arresting sculptural feat; appearing to defy gravity by impossibly balancing a huge leaning volume on a knife-edge. The highly reflective mirror-polished stainless steel heightens the visual weightlessness offering a gleaming, eye-catching pair of balancing arcs in perfect symmetry. The lustrous surface creates elegant elongated reflections of the surrounding environment, rendering the whole piece to appear almost invisible. The reflective nature of the work makes the piece easy to integrate into a living space, and the circular design creates a self-contained working area which is easy to place into an open plan space.

The company has completed projects all around the world, and specializes in unique commissions of applied art, where every detail is considered, and accomplished. Take the ‘dime’ composition for example, a unit based on the effect of a spinning coin, which appears to be as much of a sculpture as it is a functional piece, and the singular curving sheet of stainless steel that forms ‘The Wave’.

‘The Wave’

Large kitchens present challenges in the planning of an effective workspace just as small ones do, furniture must be substantial in size to comfortably fill the area, yet should not cause a small task to take longer to execute as a result of a longer journey path; to combat this, the designers create intuitive zoning to make each typical kitchen activity effortless.

The cylindrical ‘Cink’.

“Wink’ evolved out of a study in geometric forms of two arcs”

SplinterWorks aren’t just kitchen experts though, other interesting projects include the elevated, hammock-like ‘Vessel’ bathtub, and the ‘Stiletto’ which can be utilized as a desk, a console table or a dressing table, and features a slender ‘stacked heel’ silhouette and iconic ‘red sole’.

With a predominantly blank color chart you can make a few bold choices to break the monotony; if your dining set is in your kitchen, then a vibrant splashback provides the perfect opportunity for a hit of color, or dapple more subtle hints around the room in zingy accessories or book collections.

A light scheme benefits greatly from high contrasting black elements, consider making the leap to the other side of the spectrum with your choice of light shades, furniture or even a feature wall; chalkboard paint is a great idea for a kitchen diner, as it creates a fun zone to scribble recipes, the weeks family dinner menu, or shopping reminders.

A deep brown-black dining suite provides a similar boost to a pale room, or if you have already purchased a lightly toned set, try adding dark cushions to your chairs and a matching runner to your table to embolden the look.
