Coastal Cave House of French Designer Alexandre de Betak

Nestled in a small coastal village in the Tramuntana region of Majorca, with beautiful views of the Mediterranean Sea, is the home of French fashion and furniture designer Alexandre de Betak. Inspired by cave dwellings, the interior takes on an organic form, even shelves appear to push forth from natural rock to cradle the families possessions. Rustic wooden beams, doors and furniture warm the stone surroundings of this eco-friendly construction, and ceilings are cut away in seemingly random patterns of abat-jours in the hallway.

In de Betak’s own words:

For 10 years I was dreaming about it, for five years I was looking for a spot for it, for two years working on it, for another two years building it, and finally here it is…

Influenced by 1970s organic architecture, de Betak designed his unique home in its entirety, ignoring 90 degree angles and sharp edges throughout. The cool cave walls disappear as you reach the outside space of the summer hideaway for a dip in the pool, or lay out on the sun deck. A more naturally shaped pool to hug the house may have felt more fitting after exploring the curvy contours of the inner space, but the surrounding hilly views should be enough to take your mind off that. With a hectic career as a renowned events producer for clients such as Dior, Tiffany and Jennifer Lopez, this is the only place where de Betak stops to breathe and relax for an entire month. With a place as beautiful as this to rest his head, it’s amazing he can drag himself away at all.

Designer Clocks & Watches

Some people prefer to learn the time on a vintage grandfather clock that resonates through a tile corridor. Others like the chime of their rare tabletop Philippe Patek. Then, of course, there’s the old standby of the wall clock. No matter what our time-telling preference, we do not expect to exact significant effort to see that it’s 4:20. These designed watches, however, make complications on a true watch-o-philes’s wrist seem. They certainly reveal a preference among designers to eschew the relationship between form and function. They are about as easy to read as a 19th century marine chronometer. Beauty has its place in clocks, but who wants to read an instruction manual or watch a Youtube video about how to read a clock?

We could describe it as minimalism in chronometers.
Color wheels not only give the time but also an aesthetic means of diversion. Is it synesthesia if you start thinking of numbers in terms of colors?
Clock developed by Anna Marinenko as a tribute to Japan.
Time in this clock reveals itself as gracefully and beautifully as a Chinese coquette behind her fan.
One should wonder about a clock's effectiveness-- or at least about the designer's sense of relationship between form and function-- if it comes with instructive photos.
Telling time inherently requires a bit of mathematical knowledge. In this case, however, it might take thrice as long to determine the hour if reading the scroll-like domino structure. It might therefore be akin to reading Japanese scrolls.
This will clock turns 24-hour military time into something whimsical and artful. Its dimensionalism further adds to its attractive design.
The subtlety of this clock adds to its appeal. Whose eyes would linger on the magnification of the numbers as time passes?
This retro watch still bears something that's a little flash forward. its gentle gradation of color delights the eye as the minimal indicators of time intrigue the mind.
Perhaps it's easier to admit the passage of time if a clock bears what appears to be metal lace over its face.

Designer Bathtubs

It’s as if these bathtub designers had poetry in mind when they compiled these designs. Each tub seems pure metaphor. Lying in them, enjoying their hydrotherapeutic essence, will feel like Calgone has taken you away.

Designed by Chin Chia Lim, the Würfel - or Falling Water - tub brings the infinity pool experience indoors.
Those who take their hygiene to scientific levels might prefer the Beignet tub by Japan-based Spiritual Mode.
Instead of the little old woman who lived in a shoe you can be the lavish woman who bathed in a shoe. SICIS designed these glass mosaic shoe tubs.
Ron Arad worked with Italian bathroom design company Teuco to reinvent the boxy standup shower. Turn the lip up when showering or turn it down when bathing in this gorgeous multipurpose unit. [Via]
ZAAFDesign has designed this Brezza Bathtub and constructed it out of Corian for Wisdom Sanitary Ware Co., Ltd.. The problem is that of form and function. Who's actually going to sit beside the bather, on Corian? That it looks like a glass of spilling milk suspended in time almost makes up for that major design flaw. [Via]
Perhaps a professional scuba diver or even a marine biologist might be as fish-friendly as required of the homeowner who buys this, the ,500 Moody Acquario. One question lingers: how does one clean out the fish tank? [Via]
Use this Utuwa tub, designed by Spiritual Mode to soak from head to toe or just to soak the feet. [Via]
Italian design company BluBleu designed this reclining tub. More on that here.
This glorious sunken bathing round with a built-in foot massage, known as the Shore Tub, is the result of a creative collaboration of the HeyTeam Collective and Teuco.[Via]

Ready-Made Curtains With A Designer Look

Ready Made Curtains 17Anyone who has considered new window treatments, and has looked at the available options, has found two different ways to approach the project. Shopping a local retailer for ready-made window treatments usually means a visit to the big box stores for pre-packaged curtains or valances, and the results are very disappointing: cheap fabrics, no lining, uneven hemming, and limited selection. Usually the colors and patterns are less than trendy, and the limited selection means anything you purchase has a chance of showing up at your neighbor’s house as well.
Custom window treatments have always been the anti-dote to this problem. With an endless selection of fabrics, custom sized for your windows, and high-quality finishing techniques such as interlining and blind-hemming, custom is the way to go for the most high end, individualized designer look. However, custom window treatments can take weeks to complete, and depending on the client’s choice of fabric, are more expensive. If you have good sewing skills, you may be willing to tackle such a project, but who has time in today’s busy world?
The newest entry into the window treatment marketplace addresses the needs of today’s design-savvy consumer. She’s looking for high-end quality, a reasonable price, and a quick turnaround. We like to call them Semi-Custom Curtains. This clever idea marries the concept of ready-made with the high-end quality of custom, at a more affordable price point. Semi-Custom curtains are ready made in single and double-width panels, and come in two finished lengths. The large fabric selection offers high-end designer fabrics such as linen and silk, in the latest colors. All panels are lined, and the silk panels are interlined, just like a custom window panel. For hanging, many styles have a rod-pocket and back tab, meaning they can be shirred on a rod, or the rod can simply slide through tabs on the back side for a tailored look without shirring. Curtain panels can also be hung on standard rings. The three different hanging methods not only offer different looks, they can be used with several different types of curtain rods, so expensive custom rods are not necessary.
The design philosophy behind Semi-Custom Curtains relies on the fact that so many houses today use similar floor plans and details. Most newer homes have single and double windows throughout, making simple curtain panels easy to hang. A pair of Semi-Custom Curtains on a classic wood or iron rod can frame a single window and close for privacy. When used with shades or blinds on wider windows, they add color and warmth to the room as stationary side panels, while the shades and blinds can be used for privacy.
To accommodate different ceiling heights, Semi-Custom Curtain come in two lengths: 96” for 8-9 foot ceiling height, and 108” for 9-10 foot ceiling height. Curtains should always be hung on the drywall, 4-6” above the window frame. Ordering is easy – just measure from the top of the window frame to the floor, and we can calculate the right length for you. Be sure to measure the width of the window too, on the outside edge of the woodwork. To make window look larger, purchase a rod that is 12”-18” wider than the window width, and allow the curtain panels to hang on the wall area, leaving the glass more open and creating the illusion of a wider window.
Our new display of Semi-Custom Curtains makes ordering hassle free – seeing actual finished curtain panels on display really helps the homeowner imagine the final effect. Just bring in your measurements, and we’ll help you decide the panel size, how many, and what type of rod you’ll need. Once you’ve placed your order, delivery of the curtain panels and rods is just a couple of weeks. Our professional installer can hang them for you if needed.
If you want to coordinate other elements in the room, matching bedding components such as bedskirts, duvets and shams are available, as well as throw pillows and shower curtains. Semi-Custom is a great way to decorate for anyone who wants to speed up the process, trim the budget, and still maintain a high level of designer quality in their home.
