Jewel of Kahana House, Beachside in Maui, Hawaii
The seven bedroom, seven bathroom ‘Jewel of Kahana’ house sits oceanfront in West Maui, Hawaii, on ½ acre of land. Amongst the palm trees, this stunning home is approximately 9,000 Sq. Ft, constructed with an abundance of windows and walls of glass that disappear into the bordering rock walls, allowing every bit of the ocean views to be soaked up.

A pool surrounds the homes patio on two sides, edged with irregular stonework for a natural look, with mini waterfalls cascading over the rocks at one end, and a spa.

Rustic stone feature walls are offset with sunny orange tones and sophisticated furniture.

When you have had enough of the pool and the sun is setting, an extensive games room with pool, games tables and even a home sports bar awaits you inside the property.

An extensive dining area houses two table sets, and the kitchen island alone seats ten people; this is certainly a house for entertaining.

A beautiful mezzanine bedroom gets its views high above the grand living area with huge open kitchen, and a separate enclosed butler’s kitchen.

Each bedroom is an oceanfront master suite with views of neighboring island Lanai and glimpses of Molokai. The rooms, complete with luxurious bath and wet bar, are accessorized with seashells to bring the beach scene indoors, and furnishings are simple but sumptuous with plush headboards and flat screen TVs.

The space is decorated in colors influenced by nature, fresh green and sea blue teamed with rich wood, and light marble floors reminiscent of a white sandy beach.

Complete with 529 Sq. Ft. Guest Home, with one bedroom and one bathroom, this home is on the market for a cool ,900,000.

The Ghost Writer Movie House
The movie set of The Ghost Writer (released as The Ghost in the United Kingdom) is a stunning beach house in Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts with sleek Walter Knoll interior in a deep muted color palette, but as this was just a set, this dream house remains just a dream; in fact, the movie was not even filmed in America due to the fact that the notorious cult director Roman Polanski was not allowed to enter the country.
The political thriller stars Ewan McGregor, Pierce Brosnan, Kim Cattrall and Olivia Williams, but the star of the movie for us was the fictional Prime Minister’s estate. For exterior location shots of the imposing modernist building, a façade was built at Usedom, Germany, and the plush interior shots were done on sets constructed at Babelsberg.

During the day shots the fortress of a house was flooded with sunlight via large windows framing serene views, illustrating the isolated location of the home. The colors of the landscape bleed into the dramatic interior, and the use of natural textures fuse the inside and outside spaces.

At nightfall the Lang’s estate is a luxurious haven bathed in soft lighting, transforming into a scene of sophisticated comfort.

Splashes of color splice the interior in the form of large art canvases, evoking the ambience of a modern art gallery.

Carrara House by Andres Remy Arquitectos
The beautiful Carrara House in Pilar, Argentina, was designed by Andres Remy Arquitectos; the home stands two stories high with the walls constructed almost entirely of huge windows that bathe the interior in bright natural light, and let the outside positively flood in.

The seating area also looks out through a low window, reminiscent of a fireplace, towards the entrance steps; we guess in an open sociable space like this, it’s probably useful to keep an eye out for approaching feet of party guests!

To continue the inside-outside feel, the architect has included a decorative indoor pool as part of a large yet understated water feature which reflects an adjacent pool out on the patio; a waterfall against a transparent pane of glass cascades all the way from the second floor, where the ceiling is cut away to reveal the upper living space, and a row of plants breathe greenery into the home, reflecting the garden beyond.

One of the three dining areas of this home floats in the stark white living space, where diners can enjoy the garden and pool views, whilst a lounge area with modern chairs in a warm pop of red provides an area to retire and enjoy the interior waterfall as the evening draws in.

A monochrome contemporary bedroom is lifted with a splash of red.

A stripe of green adds edge to a simple white kitchen scheme

Spectacular Modern House With Open Design And Adjacent Pool
Casa dos Ipês in Sao Paulo, Brazil, was a project embarked upon a decade ago by Marcio Kogan, a design of exposed concrete that many builders deemed practically impossible. The heavy material has been given amazing grace in this construction, with the magnitude appearing to float above the glass volume of the lower floor.
In the upper mass, bedrooms surround a central TV room, and receive light via a wooden panel on the façade that is broken into shutters. Both thermally and aesthetically pleasing, when closed these shutters maintain the solid box like appearance of the upper floor, contributing to the elegance of the lower quarters.

Downstairs the living room accesses the veranda and garden via doors that retract almost the entire length of the building, and a huge set of pivoting wooden panels open up the side, making the living area an outdoor space.

A colossal bespoke sofa divides the room, with one side facing in toward TV and fireplace, and the other firmly facing the patio and pool.

The rich wood continues into the interior, which is simple and contemporary, containing banks of shelving and entertainment units. The backdrop is sophisticated, whilst tiny gems of color and quirkiness are scattered throughout in the form of accent chairs, lights and occasional tables.

‘When A Stranger Calls’ Movie House
For those of you not in the know, ‘When A Stranger Calls’ is a horror/thriller movie directed by Simon West, back in 2006. The story unfolds in an impressive house known as the Mandrakis Residence in the movie where the protagonist, Jill, arrives to babysit. This contemporary masterpiece of a house is luxury through and through, with a suspended gallery over the living room, internal aviary and ponds, and a plethora of state of the art home gadgetry. But you might be surprised to know that it was not a real home at all; the exterior was a set in Franklin Canyon Park, Beverly Hills (see pic below), and all of the interiors were shot entirely in studios. The dream home turned nightmare was decorated by the talented Traci Kirshbaum, who is also credited on movies such as ‘Prom Night’, ‘The Dukes of Hazzard’ and ‘Employee of the Month’.

Even if you weren’t impressed by the movie, you are bound to be impressed by the stunning lakeside house in which the scene is set.

The stunning riverside views from the decked entrance set a secluded scene for the intense movie plot

The contemporary entrance to the Mandrakis Residence is modest in its nature rich surroundings

The dreamlike zen aviary at the centre of the house is complete with exotic greenery, extensive fishponds and soothing water features

The suspended platform over the living space takes in the awesome lakeside views, and stores the home library for when night falls over the panorama

Classic furniture contrasts against the fresh backdrop

The house tour that took place in the movie was our favourite part!

This movie house has even inspired several models in the popular Sims games series, each echoing the waterside modern structure with rich hardwood floors, classic furniture pieces and sophisticated elegance. In this piece rendered out by user Rosalie we even see a digitized version of the idyllic waterside, and the beautiful nature packed courtyard

Glass Walled House at Sentosa Cove
Stretching out towards the ocean, this glass walled Sentosa house, by Beige Interior, draws on the surrounding natural environment, a magnetic pull of tranquility. The retracting glass doors allow indoor and outdoor spaces to interact, and rooms to interlink in extraordinary ways, plunge into the expansive pool after lounging in the deck fronted living space, and emerge at the dining area for family refreshment.
A whitewashed and beige color scheme runs throughout, complimented by oak and travertine stone. Splashes of greenery and vivid blue flood the designer glass box, blending the structure with nature by both absorbing and reflecting the trees, water and sky in this privileged seashore location. The house climbs via ‘floating’ oak staircase, rising by a solitary tree in the pebbled courtyard. The central hall resembles a modern art gallery with large pieces of photography and sculpture to appreciate en route to bedrooms. The master bed is separated by glass from an en-suite bathroom, allowing uninterrupted enjoyment of the scenery, no matter if you’re relaxing on the bed or under bubbles in the tub.
Despite the open air effect of this outside-in architecture, the modern interior maintains a cozy atmosphere, with huge plush rugs, and soft natural tones celebrating its close-to-nature styling, and when nighttime falls you can retire to the sub level for your gym workout, or take in a movie at the home theatre.

Bridge House [Visualized]
Architect Max Pritchard designed the Bridge House, which is situated near Adelaide, Australia, creating a plan that respects to the Aboriginal “Touch the Earth Lightly” approach, both visually and environmentally. In this 3D visualization of the house by designer Faraz, we see the structure is clad with recyclable sheet steel, and encounter the insulated concrete floor slab that stores heat for reradiating at night. These visuals soften the existing rugged landscape into fairytale woodland. Setting the dewy scene at the brink of dusk, Faraz has created contrast against the yellow tones of the artificial lights from the Bridge House, making the modern structure appear warm and welcoming. The topology has been changed a little, and some items trimmed from the site, to paint an idyllic picture of this unusual home.
Beneath the house, the rocky banks that border the rippling water have been fluffed up with a cushion of long luscious grass, emphasizing the rigid shape and narrowness of the 110sqm property. With stunning views from every window, the calming bubble of the creek beneath, and a carpet of greenery as the doormat, we think the Bridge House makes a wonderful home amongst the trees.

Spread Movie House
Last week we gave you the insiders peek on a Hollywood home that actor Ashton Kutcher was interested in. Since then, we received a few queries from readers about whether it was actually the same house as the one featured in a 2009 flick named Spread, starring Ashton Kutcher himself, Anne Heche and Margarita Levieva. In answer to your questions, the featured house was not part of that movie, but we are happy to bring you details of the Spread movie house in this article.
Openhouse, now known to many as ‘the Spread set’, is also located in the Hollywood Hills, and was designed by L.A. based Xten Architecture who were asked to custom build a cantilevered home that would jut out over the hillside, by previous owner Randolph Duke. As a fashion designer and stylist, Duke had the three-bedroom home designed with parties and photo shoots in mind. The 10ft tall retractable glass walls erase boundaries between inside and out, and allow fabulous views over Los Angeles from just about every angle of the home.

The stepped and suspended structure, with first floor open living space and a master suite on the second, hovers over the twinkling city.

The natural textures and stacked stonework rough the scheme out of predictable cool contemporary, resulting in an eye catching piece of design worthy of its film star status.

Coastal Cave House of French Designer Alexandre de Betak
Nestled in a small coastal village in the Tramuntana region of Majorca, with beautiful views of the Mediterranean Sea, is the home of French fashion and furniture designer Alexandre de Betak. Inspired by cave dwellings, the interior takes on an organic form, even shelves appear to push forth from natural rock to cradle the families possessions. Rustic wooden beams, doors and furniture warm the stone surroundings of this eco-friendly construction, and ceilings are cut away in seemingly random patterns of abat-jours in the hallway.
In de Betak’s own words:
For 10 years I was dreaming about it, for five years I was looking for a spot for it, for two years working on it, for another two years building it, and finally here it is…

Influenced by 1970s organic architecture, de Betak designed his unique home in its entirety, ignoring 90 degree angles and sharp edges throughout. The cool cave walls disappear as you reach the outside space of the summer hideaway for a dip in the pool, or lay out on the sun deck. A more naturally shaped pool to hug the house may have felt more fitting after exploring the curvy contours of the inner space, but the surrounding hilly views should be enough to take your mind off that. With a hectic career as a renowned events producer for clients such as Dior, Tiffany and Jennifer Lopez, this is the only place where de Betak stops to breathe and relax for an entire month. With a place as beautiful as this to rest his head, it’s amazing he can drag himself away at all.

Winter House
Based on the Casa Codina house by A4 Estudio, the Winter House visualized by Black Haus is depicted in a perfect snow covered dream. The landscape was designed to create maximum contrast between the icy outdoors and the warmth of the lit interior. With the cognitive sensation of tingling noses and fingertips ignited, as our eyes reached the warm light box of color amidst the bleak landscape, we’d say they achieved their objective.
The actual Casa Codina house is situated in the city of Mendoza, Argentina, where the inhabitants enjoy a typically continental climate. In fact, the Latin American house was designed to utilize good weather conditions for a greener way of living. The courtyard that forms the centre of the structure was designed for environmental benefits in the interior spaces of the house that surround the garden perimeter. With all of this in mind, placing a home of this style onto a stark snowy landscape somehow just works. Imagine turning those lights down low, warming your hands around a mug of cocoa and watching the snow fall… bliss.
