Casa dos Ipês in Sao Paulo, Brazil, was a project embarked upon a decade ago by Marcio Kogan, a design of exposed concrete that many builders deemed practically impossible. The heavy material has been given amazing grace in this construction, with the magnitude appearing to float above the glass volume of the lower floor.

In the upper mass, bedrooms surround a central TV room, and receive light via a wooden panel on the façade that is broken into shutters. Both thermally and aesthetically pleasing, when closed these shutters maintain the solid box like appearance of the upper floor, contributing to the elegance of the lower quarters.

Downstairs the living room accesses the veranda and garden via doors that retract almost the entire length of the building, and a huge set of pivoting wooden panels open up the side, making the living area an outdoor space.

A colossal bespoke sofa divides the room, with one side facing in toward TV and fireplace, and the other firmly facing the patio and pool.

The rich wood continues into the interior, which is simple and contemporary, containing banks of shelving and entertainment units. The backdrop is sophisticated, whilst tiny gems of color and quirkiness are scattered throughout in the form of accent chairs, lights and occasional tables.

Shelves like the Prop Shelf play an important role in our homes. They hold small items we have at home while at the same time play as part of our interior design. We were browsing through Italian kitchen maker Elmar Cucine‘s catalog the other day and liked what we saw. The forms they use are simple with bold lines and sharp edges giving their designs somewhat of a masculine touch. This emphasis on simplicity is no accident and is expressed quite clearly in their philosophy:

There’s something to be said about these Japanese kitchens – they are sleek, modern, captivating, and makes quite the dynamic statement. You cannot pin them to a particular mood or tone – they can be warm and cozy or cool and clean. But one popular idea most Japanese kitchens seem to subscribe to is to bring people together, to create a space that can be lived in – a space that incorporates cooking, eating, and relaxing all together. Essentially, a place one would enjoy spending a lot of time in with friends and family – laughing, sharing stories and recipes with, and enjoying the company of each other in a comfortable and inviting room. The designs from ToyoKitchen show all aspects of traditional design though in quite modern settings. Their designs include warm tones with wood flooring and cabinetry and also cooler tones with stainless steel countertops and appliances. One consistent theme you will notice is straight lines – from the cabinetry and flooring to the lighting and seating areas you will see a continuity of simple lines. It is the clean lines and minimalist approach that makes Japanese kitchen design stand out and keeps families cooking, eating, and loving every moment they spend in their beautifully designed rooms.

These wonderful bathroom designs made us gasp! Irina Schastlivaya can make bathrooms look like works of art, simply by using patterns on tiles. The patterns are not too in-your-face and by that making the space appear even smaller and cluttered – they are unnoticable, at first, but add a whole new dimension to what would easily be a boring bathroom. She always slips one or two eye-catching details that make the space feel inviting. Golden handles or thin golden tiles, ambient lighting cleverly distributed throughout the room that create a warm, inviting atmosphere… as if she knows just exactly what every bathroom should feel like! When it comes to combining vintage and modern, that’s a job that is quite tricky if you’re not a genuine professional. It can look abruptly put together, and even clashing. But it seems to us that this designer passed yet another test – just look what she did with this warm, luxurious bathroom which combines modern furniture in a strong colour, with strong patterns and decors on the tiles and the glass doors. Who would say that halogen lights above the mirror go so well with vintage patterns on these voluptuous red tiles?

Now, with slightly bigger bathrooms, the designer gave herself room for over-doing it. Painting the pipes in a rich gold colour, choosing to clash warm toned tiles with cooler toned ones, or mixing patterns all over the place, we feel that when it comes to these designs, it becomes a question of taste. Some people may like the Moroccan feel of the blueish-cream bathroom, and some may find it to be too much. To some, marble is cold and slippery, hence impractical, and don’t think that it’s the best choice for a bathroom floor, but those who like luxury and a vintage feel in their bathrooms should enjoy these upcoming photographs. We find them very interesting and wonderful! Especially the ones, where she combines dark wood with different tiles!

When trying to create something visually impressive, it is naturally tempting to want to use lots of eye candy or overloaded detail. However, the simplest solution can sometimes be the best. We like this beautifully simple minimalist flat design by Polish studio Tamizo. From a designer’s eye, this type of simplicity is the ultimate sophistication. Designers know why they love this type of design, but they must always consider the average person’s perspective who may not find it visually appealing. For example a designer will see the space as “beautifully minimal”, while a non-designer’s thought may be “just plain boring”. Therefore, it is critical that when venturing into this territory, that not only must it be done with the proper balance and proportion, but also with a focus. These photos show a color combination of white and gray/silver tones which invoke feelings of serenity and inner order, while the choice of black accents in moderation helps to achieve a feeling of sophisticated contentment. The warm neutral tan colors introduced by the floor and table interject a calming note to the rooms. Add a little “pop” of color, such as a plate of green apples and a bamboo plant, and suddenly….the room sings. Notice a focus? We think “Modern Ideal Refuge”.
